The Town of Oxford was Founded in 1791 by

Settler Richard Thompson

The name itself is derived from the fact that early settlers discovered that the shallow river was easy to navigate with oxen carts. Thus it followed that the area became known as an oxen crossing and a settlement arose in the site.

Oxford and area is fortunate in that the town is located at the confluence of three rivers (Black River, River Philip and Little River). These rivers afford an excellent opportunity for some of the best salmon and trout fishing in the area.
